How to Manage Your Startup Operations on a Time Crunch

By: Carolyn Knight

As a startup CEO, you have clients to acquire, meetings to attend, paperwork to fill out, taxes to file, and a million other things to do. It can sometimes seem as though you don’t have time to fit in managing your operations. Of course, managing your operations is one of your most important duties. However, that doesn’t mean that doing so has to totally take over your life. If you’re pressed for time, here are some tips to help you manage your company’s operations:

1. Train and delegate – Business owners who think they need to do everything themselves in order for it to be done right become overwhelmed pretty quickly. Your business is your baby, and you don’t want to see it suffer simply because one of your employees didn’t complete an important task correctly. However, if you train your employees well, you have to be able to trust that they’ll get the job done. So, spend some time training and delegate operations management tasks to them. If they make some mistakes, try not to freak out. Mistakes happen, and they usually don’t cause your business too much trouble. Plus, mistakes allow everyone at your startup to learn and grow.

2. Don’t do more than what’s on your daily agenda – At the start of each day, write down everything you plan to do. Inevitably, throughout the day, more tasks will be thrown your way. Delegate those tasks to your employees or put them off until the next day, unless they’re urgent. Setting realistic goals and sticking to them well help prevent you from feeling stressed out and overwhelmed about the overall management of your operations.

3. Get the right software – There’s software that can help you with your daily operations, no matter what kind of business you run. If you sell products, inventory management software and order management software can be extremely useful in helping you keep track of your inventory and orders and ensure products are always available and shipped on time to customers. If you provide a service, client management software can be invaluable. It will allow you to keep track of everything that’s related to your business deals with clients and what services you provide them. Technology has made business management a whole lot easier, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t take advantage of it.

Managing your business doesn’t have to cause you a great deal of unnecessary stress. Try out the tips above, and don’t forget to make some time for yourself every once in a while!
